About the museum
The Museo Etnográfico de Becedas opened in 2018 in the village’s former schools. It is named after Stanley Brandes, an American anthropologist who lived in Becedas for two years to carry out the fieldwork for his doctoral thesis at the University of California, Berkeley. In it he analysed the village as an example of migration, kinship and traditions in a Spanish village; the CSIC published the study in Spanish under the title “Migración, parentesco y comunidad”. Brandes travelled from California to attend the opening.
The museum tells the story of Becedas through objects provided by its villagers. It brings together farm and livestock implements and tools, household items from decades ago, and the old clock from the tower of the parish church.
