About the museum
The Museo Etnográfico de Sama is housed in the former schools of Sama de Grado, in the La Vega district, and opened on 4 March 2005. It grew out of the efforts of the Asociación Cultural La Castañar, which from the start wanted to make the village's popular culture known. The premises were designed for this use with a grant from the Government of the Principality of Asturias.
Most of the collection, around 1,100 pieces in very good condition, comes from objects that a local resident, Olvido Menéndez, kept for years and decided to deposit somewhere anyone could see them. The objects are grouped by theme areas, such as the kitchen or the cider press (llagar), and show traditional life through the tools of farmers, rural trades, the school and Asturian culture. Another attraction is the schoolrooms themselves, decorated with tiles unique in Asturias that depict scenes from Don Quixote, along with sayings and proverbs.
