About the museum
The museum was created from the collection assembled by Dr Aser Seara, which was donated to the foundation bearing his name. The Fundación Aser Seara runs it in a building on Calle Castelao, in the old town of Allariz, built in 1920 and later renovated to provide open exhibition spaces.
The holdings bring together more than a hundred pieces of popular religious art. Sculptures predominate, especially those on Marian themes, alongside images of Christ and of saints. The works range from Romanesque to Baroque and are made of chestnut and pine wood, box wood, ivory, bone, limestone and terracotta.
The collection also includes polychrome wooden reliefs, paintings on panel, canvas and copper with scenes from the life and death of Christ, and pieces of goldwork such as reliquaries, urns and monstrances. A Russian Orthodox cross from the mid-19th century is one of the highlights.
