About the museum
The museum is linked to the collegiate church of Santa María la Real, the main monument of Xunqueira de Ambía. The monastery was founded in 955 and in the 12th century passed to the Canons Regular of St Augustine; a date of 1164 on the Porta Grande is interpreted as the date of the church's consecration. It was declared a national monument in 1931, and no religious order occupies it today.
The church is Romanesque, with three naves, a Latin cross plan, three apses and a portal with three archivolts, and is considered one of the most beautiful examples of Galician rural Romanesque. The cloister is of Gothic-Renaissance transition, from the early 16th century, and holds the Romanesque sarcophagi of the founders Aldara and Gonzalo.
Inside, the highlights are the Renaissance high altarpiece with Flemish influence, the plateresque choir, the Renaissance pulpits, the tomb of the knight Álvaro Sotelo (1508) and a Baroque organ of 1759, which hosts concerts at the end of August.
