About the museum
The Poor Clares' convent of Allariz was founded by Queen Violante, wife of Alfonso X the Wise. The present building dates from the 18th century, although its inner structure goes back to the 13th century. Over the centuries the monastery gathered works of great value, and some of them are now shown to the public.
The museum occupies three small Baroque rooms of the convent. The most important piece is the Virxe Abrideira, a small ivory carving from the late 13th century that was probably a gift from Queen Violante. Another outstanding work is a Gothic goldwork cross combining rock crystal and vitreous enamel, which brings several materials together.
