About the museum
The museum opened on 18 July 1945 as the Museo de Arte y Biblioteca Pública. In 1958 it was renamed the Museo Arqueológico Municipal “Camilo Visedo Moltó” in memory of its founder. Visedo (Alcoy, 1876–1958) was a pioneer of archaeological research in the region: he directed numerous campaigns at the La Serreta site, combined archaeology with geology and palaeontology, and bequeathed his collection to the museum, of which he was the first curator from 1945 to 1958.
The building is the former Casa de la Villa, on the Placeta del Carbó in the historic centre. The right wing, dating from 1572, has a ground-floor loggia with five Classicist arches on Tuscan columns. The building ceased to be the town hall in 1835 and later had various municipal uses. It was adapted for cultural use in the 1940s, and between 1985 and 1990 the interior was reformed and extended.
The permanent exhibition, covering about 192 m², presents a selection of material arranged by theme and chronology: groups of hunter-gatherers, the first farming and herding communities, the rock art of La Sarga, metalworking, Iberian culture, Roman times, numismatics, and the Al-Andalus and Christian medieval periods. The collections also include palaeontology, mineralogy, art, popular and devotional tilework, industrial machinery and old postcards of Alcoy. On the ground floor there is a room for temporary exhibitions, and the museum has a specialist library open to the public.
