About the museum

The Museu Municipal de Cocentaina is housed in the Palau Comtal, a former fortress whose construction began in the 13th century under Roger de Llúria. In 1448 Ximén Pérez de Corella bought the lordship of Cocentaina and converted the building into a palace. In the 17th century the Corella family built the Poor Clares monastery next to it.

The route includes the Sala Dorada (Golden Hall), with mural paintings from 1613 to 1623 by Jerónimo Rodríguez de Espinosa and his son. They celebrate the Corella lineage and form one of the most important sets of genealogical mural painting in the Valencian Community. The Sala de Embajadores has served as an exhibition space since 2002 and houses the altarpiece of Santa Bàrbara, in the Italo-Gothic style of the 14th century, an altarpiece of Sant Antoni Abad attributed to Nicolau Borràs, and an illuminated Latin Bible from the 13th–14th centuries. The Sala de les Finestres displays works by the local sculptor Vicent de Paul Agulló Sanchís (1932–1994).
