About the museum

MUBOMA is the museum of the Consorcio Provincial de Bomberos de Alicante and presents itself as the first fire service museum in the Valencian Community. It opened in Alcoy, a city with a long industrial tradition.

The museum occupies a two-storey building with neoclassical elements that forms part of the industrial complex that grew up in the 19th century along the Barxell and Riquer rivers. It was built as a textile factory: first for cotton, then for felt and finally for yarn. In 1985 a large fire destroyed much of the building, which today houses an exhibition devoted precisely to the fight against fire. The interior structure is pine wood, and the main façade combines sandstone and tuff.

The exhibition is organised in thematic blocks and uses audiovisuals, texts and panels. It begins with the birth of industry in Alcoy and its development, and goes on to the origins and development of the firefighting profession. Visitors learn about the tools and the technical and human resources of the trade, the different extinguishing methods, and the role of fire and water.
