About the museum

The Refugio de Cervantes is one of more than twenty-five shelters that the population of Alcoy used to protect themselves from air attacks during the Spanish Civil War. It is an underground gallery more than 100 metres long and 292 m² in area, with capacity for 1,166 people. It had toilet facilities, a pair of sinks with running water and electric lighting.

The route recreates data and aerial photographs of the attacks by the Italian Savoia 79 bombers that struck the city. The exhibition is completed by an interactive screen with military objects and a video featuring testimonies from people who lived through the raids and their consequences.

On the outside, shrapnel marks can still be seen on the walls of the former Cervantes school and on the former caretaker's house.
