About the museum

The Museo Arqueológico de Úbeda was created in 1972 as a section of the Museo de Jaén, by a decree that tasked it with gathering, conserving and displaying works of artistic, archaeological and historical interest from the town. It opened on 18 January 1973. Its promoter and first director was Rafael Vañó Silvestre, who also donated his private collection, although most of the archaeological holdings came from the Museo de Jaén.

The museum is housed in a Mudéjar house from the 14th and 15th centuries, discovered in 1964 during works in the former parish of San Pablo, where the narrow streets and adarves (lanes) of the Mudéjar period still survive. The building is arranged around a central courtyard with four galleries. Visitors enter through a porch with an arcade of bulging (túmido) arches and octagonal piers. When the house was adapted as a museum, this structure was kept and elements from other Úbeda houses were added, such as the entrance portal.

The collection comes from Vañó's donation, from deposits of the Museo de Jaén, including the Cazabán collection and pieces from sites such as La Calera, Castellones de Ceal or Collado de los Jardines, with Iberian votive offerings. It also includes material from excavations in Úbeda and its surroundings, as well as some donations from private individuals. The exhibition occupies three rooms, the porch, the courtyard, the entrepatio and the upper gallery.
