About the museum
The Museo Arqueológico de Espera opened in 2001 as an exhibition on the Iberian-Roman funerary world of the town. In 2003 it was provisionally registered in the Red de Museos de Andalucía (Andalusian Museum Network) and, after the extension of 2007, received full accreditation. It occupies a town house on Calle Libertad, rehabilitated for this purpose.
The collection comes from the archaeological sites in the municipality, especially Carissa Aurelia and Esperilla, and includes the most important collection of Iberian-Roman funerary sculpture in western Andalusia. The ground floor is devoted to prehistory and the Iberian-Roman funerary world, with polished axes, flint blades, Neolithic pottery, Orientalising elements from the 6th and 5th centuries BC and Roman pottery. The first floor displays objects related to everyday life in the Roman period.
