About the museum
Villamartín town council promoted the creation of the museum, which was approved unanimously at the plenary session of 17 December 1998. It was entered in the Andalusian Museums Register on 12 December 2000. Its headquarters is a building designed in the early 1960s as a cultural centre, built from 1965 and regarded as a notable work of modern Andalusian architecture in the Brutalist style; it was refurbished and adapted as a museum.
The permanent exhibition occupies two floors and is arranged chronologically: four rooms are devoted to the Palaeolithic, one to recent Prehistory, and others to the Protohistory, Antiquity and the Middle Ages, and to the early modern period together with the numismatic collection. Much of the collection comes from the Alberite megalithic necropolis, the Torrevieja site and the fortified enclosure of Matrera, as well as from donations by private individuals and pieces on deposit from the regional Department of Culture (Consejería de Cultura).
Highlights include Palaeolithic tools from the Guadalete river terraces, Orientalising and Turdetanian pottery from Torrevieja, a fragment of a Roman legal document, Caliphal and Taifa pottery with a complete atabal (Moorish drum), and Seville tableware from the founding of Villamartín in 1503. The museum has a laboratory, a restoration workshop and a researchers' room, and publishes the journal Almajar.
