About the museum
The Museo Arqueológico Municipal de Lorca was founded in March 1992 and is owned and run by the town council. It occupies the former house of the Salazar-Rosso family, also known as the house of the Moreno Rocafull family, a stately building from the 16th and 17th centuries on the Plaza de Don Juan Moreno. Its two-tier stone portal contrasts with the sober lower part of the façade.
The museum has been completely renovated and has a new exhibition design, built to earthquake-resistant standards to protect both the pieces and the visitors. Its thirteen rooms follow the traces that people have left in this area over around 30,000 years, from the Palaeolithic to the construction of the castle of Lorca, covering the periods of Romanisation, Iberian culture and Islamic culture.
Among the best-known pieces are objects from the Jewish quarter (judería) and from the synagogue of the castle, such as lamps, a Hanukkah menorah and plaster carvings (yeserías). Also on display are a Roman bronze of Mercury from El Villar de Coy, a Roman milestone and an Iberian funerary urn from the 5th century BC.
