Palacio de Guevara

About the museum

The Palacio de Guevara, also known as the Casa de las Columnas, is one of the most important examples of civil Baroque architecture in eastern Spain. From its origins it was inhabited by Juan de Guevara, appointed a knight of the Order of Santiago in 1689, and it passed from generation to generation until its last owner, Concepción Sandoval, who donated the palace to the city at the end of the 20th century. It was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 2008.

Damage from the 2011 earthquake accelerated a long restoration and the conversion of the building into a museum. Today visitors can tour all the salons of the noble floor, which hold the treasures gathered by its inhabitants over some three hundred years: paintings, sculpture, original furniture, lamps, ceramics, weapons and fans.

The rooms on the route include the Salón Amarillo, with a Baroque mirror, the Salón Rojo with its collection of fans, the Salón Verde with portraits of the family, and the pieces from the former pharmacy of José Sala. The ground floor houses the municipal tourist office of Lorca.
