About the museum
The Municipal Archaeological Museum of El Raso, owned by the Candeleda town council, displays funerary urns from the El Arenal necropolis and objects of everyday life from the walled hillfort, as well as materials from settlements older than the Vettones, such as the rock paintings of Peña Escrita and the Prao de la Carrera hillfort. It is presented as a complement to the guided visit to the site.
The Castro Celta de El Raso, on the southern slope of the Sierra de Gredos, was fortified around the 3rd century BC with a wall of about two kilometres, towers, a ditch and two bastions. Studies carried out in 2024 using drones, geophysics and LiDAR revealed a layout of some 600 houses arranged along streets, with an estimated population of around 3,000 inhabitants. By the middle of the 1st century BC the Romans ordered the population to be moved down to the plain.
A fire in 2024 destroyed the houses that had been set up for visitors, so the interior cannot currently be visited.
