About the museum
The museum is dedicated to the judía (bean) of El Barco de Ávila, an emblematic legume of the region with protected geographical indication. It was set up in the town's former slaughterhouse, where the Tormes interpretation centre had previously been, and it opened to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the protected geographical indication.
The exhibition explains the cultivation of the bean from sowing to harvesting and threshing, through panels and traditional tools: sieves, rakes, baskets, a cart, nets, a hand seeder and scales. It also displays an irrigation engine more than a hundred years old and documentation on the twenty-five years of the geographical indication. Many objects were donated by the producers themselves.
A traditional kitchen with an open fire (lumbre) shows how legumes were cooked, and a model of El Barco de Ávila with virtual characters presents the town.
