About the museum
The museum was founded on the initiative of Jerónimo Molina García, who in the 1950s carried out the first excavations at Coimbra del Barranco Ancho, an Iberian settlement dating from the 4th to the 2nd century BC. The archaeology section was separated from the ethnographic collection in 2001 and installed in the former Palacio del Concejo (council palace), on the Plaza de Arriba.
The building was constructed in the mid-16th century in the Mannerist style, by Julián de Alamíquez, and is considered one of the finest examples of civil Renaissance architecture in the Region of Murcia.
The exhibition is spread over three floors. The first covers the period from the Palaeolithic to the Iron Age, with material from El Cerco, El Prado, the Cueva de los Tiestos and the Portichuelo. The second is dedicated to the Iberian world, with Coimbra del Barranco Ancho, a model of a house, objects from the sanctuary and the funerary cippus of the horsemen, dating from the 4th century BC. The third presents the Roman Empire, with a mosaic from the Villa de los Cipreses, terracotta, oil lamps and remains of funerary monuments, as well as medieval Islamic and Christian ceramics.
