About the museum
This section of the Museo Municipal Jerónimo Molina occupies a manor house in the old town of Jumilla, on the Plaza de la Constitución. The museum takes its name from Jerónimo Molina García, who excavated important sites in the municipality, and its origins date back to 1956.
The ground floor is devoted to geology and palaeontology: it holds numerous fossils from the municipal area, largely from the Sebastián Martínez collection, and more than 500 minerals, among them the volcanic rocks known as jumillitas. Trace fossils (icnitas), that is, fossil footprints from the sites of the Hoya de la Sima and the Sierra de las Cabras, which are declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (asset of cultural interest), are also shown; the tourist website presents them as one of the best records of Tertiary footprints.
The first floor displays local ethnography from the 18th to the 20th centuries: grape harvest, esparto, farming, domestic life and religious practice. A reconstructed pharmacy stands out, with jars and pharmacy furniture from the 16th to the 20th centuries, donated by the pharmacist Juan Molina. The second floor houses an entomology collection of some 1,500 insects, mostly tropical butterflies from South Africa and South America, as well as fauna from the Altiplano.
