About the museum
The Franciscan convent of Santa Ana del Monte stands about 6 km south of Jumilla, in the Sierra de Santa Ana. The site had an early cult dedicated to Saint Anne around 1450, beside a spring; the Franciscans chose this spot, near the Fuente de la Jarra, to build the present convent, which dates from the 16th century. Friars such as Saint Pascual Bailón passed through its walls, and writers such as Azorín and José Luis Castillo Puche devoted pages to it.
The museum brings together pieces that have come over the centuries through donations and through the friars' missionary journeys: paintings, sculptures, manuscripts, archaeological remains, fossils and craft objects. Among the best-known works are the Cristo Amarrado a la Columna (Christ Tied to the Column), attributed to Francisco Salzillo, the Cristo de la Reja and the image of the Abuelica Santa Ana. Two small panels attributed to Juan de Juanes and two reliquaries of 1613 are also on show.
There is also an ethnography section, a mission room with objects from Central America and Asia, and a convent library. The convent is still inhabited and its church is used for worship, so the visit takes place during the set hours and the enclosed part is not open to visitors.
