About the museum
The Museo Arqueológico Municipal “Vicent Casanova” opened in 1970. It is housed in a building annexed to the parish church, now owned by the town council of Bocairent, and consists of one large exhibition room and a small room used as a reconstruction laboratory, office and store.
The collection covers a long historical period, from the Upper Palaeolithic to well into the Middle Ages, with materials found mainly at sites in the municipality. Caves such as the Vinalopó cave and those of La Sarsa, La Gerra and La Monja are the main sources of these objects.
The Cueva de la Sarsa is one of the most important Neolithic sites in the western Mediterranean, and the museum displays a large number of cardial pottery pieces. Part of the collective Eneolithic burial from the Cueva de la Gerra is shown, and from the Cueva de la Monja there is a good selection of medieval and Morisco pottery. The Iberian Lion of Bocairent, from the 4th century BC, is kept in the Pío V Museum in Valencia, not in Bocairent.
