About the museum

The Museu Valencià del Paper in Banyeres de Mariola opened in 1999, and the following year it was recognised as a museum by the Generalitat Valenciana. It is the only paper museum in the Comunitat Valenciana, and it recalls that Banyeres was the second most important centre in the Iberian Peninsula for the manufacture of cigarette paper.

The collection has three main groups: cigarette paper booklets, watermarks and paper-making tools, which researchers can consult. The exhibition uses objects and multimedia projections to explain the universal history of paper and local details. There is an audiovisual room on the ground floor with documentaries made by the museum, and virtual reality screens recreate how the old machines worked; with 3D glasses you can visit the inside of a chimney and the boilers of a mill.

In 2019 the museum began a new phase with renewed content. It is located in the Vil·la Rosario municipal park, alongside other museums in the town, and it is the natural starting point of the Ruta dels Molins, a route through the paper mills and weirs of Banyeres, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural, which follows the upper course of the Vinalopó river.
