About the museum
In June 1957 the Junta Pro Semana Santa decided to build a museum to preserve and display the sculptural groups of the processions, which the brotherhoods kept in old premises with leaks and a risk of fire. That same year it acquired an orchard next to the church of Santa María la Nueva, and the museum opened to the public on 9 September 1964. In 1990 an adjoining house and plot were bought to extend it, and on 25 February 1994 it was reopened.
The collection brings together 36 sculptural groups, tunics and habits of the city's brotherhoods, with works by religious sculptors such as Ramón Álvarez, Mariano Benlliure and Quintín de la Torre. The museum closed on 18 September 2022 to build a new building, largely financed by the Zamora Provincial Council. During the works, the floats remain in churches in the old town. No reopening date has been published.
