About the museum
Jaén Cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin, is the most visible expression of the splendour of the diocese between the 16th and 18th centuries. After the conquest of the city in 1246, the main mosque was consecrated as the first Christian church. In 1368 it was demolished to build a Gothic cathedral, which had to be rebuilt at the end of the 15th century. In 1525 it was judged that the cimborrio (dome over the crossing) was in danger of collapse, and it was decided to build a sturdier structure.
Work on the present church began around 1551 to the designs of Andrés de Vandelvira, who conceived a hall-church plan without an ambulatory (girola). His successors respected the original design, although the decoration was later carried out in the Baroque style. The church was consecrated in 1660, the façade was completed in 1688, and construction concluded with the Sagrario (Blessed Sacrament chapel), begun in 1764 and consecrated in 1801.
Today the cultural visit covers the nave, the interior of the choir, the sacristy, the chapter house, the upper galleries and the cathedral museum. Admission includes an audio guide and a virtual reality experience.
