About the museum
The Museo de Artes y Costumbres Populares de Jaén opened on 20 December 1990 in the Palacio de Villardompardo, a 16th-century Renaissance palace built for Fernando Torres y Portugal, Count of Villardompardo and Viceroy of Peru. Today the palace is the Centro Cultural Palacio de Villardompardo, which also houses the Arab Baths and the International Naïve Art Museum.
The museum is spread across a basement, two floors and a storerooms level, and shows the popular ways of life of the province of Jaén before industrialisation. The basement covers vine, olive, cereals and water; the entrance floor displays weights and measures and means of transport; the first floor recreates childhood, the rural house, a bourgeois room, pottery, cordovan leather and guadamecí (embossed leather), and textiles; and the storerooms level presents the pig slaughter, craft workshops and trades, and popular religiosity.
