About the museum
The Museo de Artes y Costumbres Juan Eslava Galán in Arjona (Jaén) began to take shape in the summer of 2011 and opened its doors in November 2012. It is named after the writer Juan Eslava Galán, who donated most of the collection; the rest comes from contributions by residents, and the collection continues to grow with new donations.
The museum occupies the former Hospital de San Miguel, known as the Casa del Rey, a building it shares with the Archaeological Museum and which tradition links to the birth of Ibn al-Ahmar, founder of the Nasrid dynasty of Granada. It houses ethnographic objects and utensils used by the people of Arjona in recent times, such as tools for olive growing and the pig slaughter, and it re-creates spaces of the traditional home. Among the pieces, the original throne used in the filming of “Lawrence of Arabia” stands out.
