About the museum
The Museo Íbero de Jaén opened on 11 December 2017. It is a monographic museum dedicated to the Iberian peoples and their culture, not limited to the province but covering the various Iberian peoples who lived in Andalusia. It depends on the Junta de Andalucía (regional government of Andalusia), and its collection brings together pieces from the museums of the region and of the rest of Spain.
It stands on the site of the former Jaén prison, which was in use until 2006. In 2001 the Diputación Provincial (provincial council), the city council, the Ministry of the Interior and the Junta de Andalucía agreed to dedicate the site to a museum on Iberian culture, and in 2003 an ideas competition for the building was held. The new building covers more than 11,000 m² and includes a 148-seat auditorium and a restoration laboratory.
Iberian culture brought together peoples of the south and east of the Iberian Peninsula between the 7th and 1st centuries BCE, with a hierarchical aristocratic organisation, the rite of cremation and close relations with the Phoenicians and Tartessians. The history of the museum cites the sculptural group of Porcuna as an example of this cultural development.
