About the museum
The museum is linked to the Convent of the Concepción in Ágreda, in the province of Soria, and commemorates Sor María Jesús de Ágreda, a Conceptionist nun. She was abbess of the community and promoted the construction of the present convent, begun in 1627; the nuns moved into the new building on 10 June 1633.
For 22 years Sor María maintained a relationship of political and spiritual counsel with King Philip IV, of which 618 letters survive. She also wrote several works, among them “Mística Ciudad de Dios” (Mystical City of God), considered one of the first works by a Spanish woman writer.
The exhibition brings together objects of the nun: her correspondence with the monarch, some of her writings, royal portraits from the school of Velázquez and a silver ewer, gifts from the king himself. Her incorrupt body is preserved in the convent church.
