Museum of religious art in a Romanesque church in Ágreda, with altarpieces and sculptures from the 13th to the 18th century from parishes in the area.

Opening hoursAdmission €1.50

About the museum

The museum occupies the church of Nuestra Señora de la Peña, the oldest Romanesque church in Ágreda. The building was erected at the end of the 12th century and was consecrated in 1193. It has two naves of different widths, which is unusual in the Peninsula, and was remodelled in the 15th and 16th centuries in the late Gothic style. According to historical tradition, Jaime I and Leonor of Castile were married here in 1221, the only royal wedding held in the province of Soria.

Since 2002 the church has housed the Museo de Arte Sacro. The project, which lasted five years, was promoted by the Regional Ministry of Education and Culture of the Junta de Castilla y León, the Diocese of Osma-Soria and the Ágreda town council, and it became the first museum of religious art in the community. The ownership belongs to the parish of Nuestra Señora de los Milagros and the management to the town council.

The collection brings together more than twenty-five altarpieces and sculptures from the 13th to the 18th century, many from nearby parishes and little known to the public. The Gothic works stand out, among them the altarpiece of Saint John the Evangelist, from around 1430-1445, and several 15th-century panels, together with Romanesque and Baroque pieces.
