About the museum
The Museo Sardinero is the museum headquarters of the Agrupación Sardinera de Murcia, the body that organises the Entierro de la Sardina (Burial of the Sardine), a festival that closes the Fiestas de Primavera (Spring Festivities) and is declared of International Tourist Interest. Its doors opened on 6 October 2006 on the first floor of Pavilion II of the former Cuartel de Artillería, in the El Carmen district.
The headquarters occupies about 160 m² and holds much of the association’s heritage: a picture gallery with the original artworks that gave rise to the festival’s announcement posters, from the one by Ramón Gaya (1988) to the most recent; trophies, awards and honours, among them the Gold Medal of the Región de Murcia (1991) and the Gold Medal of the City of Murcia (2000); a collection of models of the last sardine catafalques; and the flags and banners of the sardine groups.
The museum does not publish regular visiting hours; it opens to the public on special occasions, such as International Museum Day, and contact is made by telephone or email.
