About the museum

The municipal museum traces its origins to 1979, when an exhibition called Museo de Historia, Arte y Arqueología was installed on the first floor of the former Casa-Cuartel (barracks). It included contemporary painting, documents from the municipal archive and a small archaeological display from the region. In 1988, under the name Museo Municipal de Arqueología y Etnología, the building was remodelled and a new chronological route through the history of the Alto Palancia was set up, from prehistory to the Middle Ages.

In 1997 the Generalitat Valenciana recognised it as a Permanent Museographic Collection. Two years later, after renovating the archaeology rooms and opening the ethnology section on the second floor, it received official recognition as a museum. Today it is, together with the Museo Catedralicio, the only recognised museum in the region, and it holds the materials from archaeological excavations in the Alto Palancia.

The building is the former Casa-Cuartel on the Plaza de los Mesones, in sober neoclassical style. It was built between 1788 and 1792 to house the city's troops, using stone from the old castle-alcázar. It stands next to the medieval aqueduct, the Botxí and Cárcel towers and the Portal de Teruel.
