About the museum
The Museo del Azulejo Manolo Safont, founded in 1968, has since then preserved important collections of Valencian architectural ceramic tiles. It is located in Onda, the centre of one of Spain's most important tile-making areas, and presents ceramics not only as heritage of the past but also as the current economic engine of the region. The Ayuntamiento de Onda (town council) backed its development as a tourist attraction and as a centre for the conservation, research and dissemination of the history of ceramics.
Its holdings, some 80,000 objects, span from the classical period to the present day and are notable for tiles of the 19th and 20th centuries, with examples of Art Nouveau. They also include industrial ethnographic objects, such as machines and tools, and documentary series with drawings, templates, catalogues and photographs. The permanent exhibition explains the historical, social, technical and economic aspects of tile manufacturing.
The building also houses a restoration and conservation workshop, a specialist library, a video library, a sound archive, a training room and the Escuela de Cerámica de Onda.
