About the museum
The Eduardo Westerdahl Museum of Contemporary Art (MACEW) was born on 28 March 1953 around the Instituto de Estudios Hispánicos de Canarias (IEHC), owner of the collection, and the critic and writer Eduardo Westerdahl (1902–1983), after whom it is named. It is considered one of the first museums of contemporary art created in Spain. In 1965 Westerdahl left the project, and the collection was kept in storage for decades.
After the collection was rescued in 2001, it was displayed again. The museum reopened on 28 June 2007 in the former Customs House (Casa de la Aduana) of Puerto de la Cruz, an 18th-century building made available by the Cabildo de Tenerife. The museum occupies the first floor; on the ground floor there is a tourist information office.
The collections bring together works by Canarian, Spanish and international 20th-century artists, and reflect the friendships that shaped one of the country's first collections of contemporary art. They include, among others, Óscar Domínguez, Manolo Millares, Lola Massieu, César Manrique, Pedro González, Eileen Agar, Maud Bonneaud and Will Faber. The museum runs free educational visits for schools, with the itinerary and workshop “Codo con codo”.
