Museum of Ibero-American and Canarian craft in the former Dominican convent of La Orotava, run by the Cabildo de Tenerife.

Opening hoursAdmission €2

About the museum

The Museum of Ibero-American Craft of Tenerife (MAIT) occupies the former convent of San Benito Abad, now known as the former convent of Santo Domingo, in La Orotava. The Dominicans built it in the 17th century, and in the 18th century it became one of the most important convents in the province. It is now run by the Cabildo de Tenerife.

Highlights of the building include the stone arch of the entrance, the cloister, the wooden coffered ceilings (artesonados) and the stone staircase. It houses part of the work of the Canarian architect, sculptor and gilder Antonio de Orbarán. Within its walls there was also important teaching activity, in which figures such as Tomás de Iriarte, José de Viera y Clavijo and Agustín de Betancourt studied and worked.

The permanent exhibition presents Ibero-American craft, both current and disappeared, with particular attention to the Canary Islands. It brings together pieces from collections lent by various bodies, acquisitions made by the centre itself and private donations. Highlights include the collection “Arte popular en América y Filipinas” (folk art of America and the Philippines), the regional design awards for Canarian craft, folk musical instruments of Spain and America, and Spanish folk ceramics.
