About the museum
The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo José María Moreno Galván opened in 1995 as a tribute to the art critic José María Moreno Galván, a native of La Puebla de Cazalla who died in 1981. Its predecessor was the Centro Cultural José María Moreno Galván, known as Casa Panera, which the town council set up in 1987 after reforming and extending the town's granary (pósito). That work had begun in 1984 with help from the Diputación de Sevilla.
The building is a 16th-century granary that later had other uses: silo, prison, warehouse and, in the 1930s, a National School, where José María and his brother Francisco studied. Francisco was the author of the rehabilitation project. The museum reopened in 2011 with an exhibition programme that continues the critic's work of bringing contemporary art to both non-specialist audiences and experts.
The permanent collection brings together works from the most significant currents of the second half of the 20th century, with artists such as Picasso, Vázquez Díaz, Miró, José Guerrero, Matta, Oteiza, Millares, Tàpies, Lucio Muñoz, Maruja Mallo, Guinovart and Antonio López. In one of the towers, paintings and posters from Francisco Moreno Galván's flamenco festivals are displayed. The museum also organises temporary exhibitions, artist residencies and the Jornadas Art Brut, in collaboration with the municipality's occupational day centre.
