About the museum

The Capilla del Arte is a work by the artist Miguel Sevillano, who began in 2009 to build, on an olive grove that had belonged to his grandfather, a neoclassical-style building decorated with neo-Baroque paintings. He conceived it as a gallery to display his collection and as a working studio, and worked on it for more than ten years. It stands on the boundary between the municipal areas of Olvera and Torre Alháquime, next to the Baroque sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios.

The architect Eduardo Francou designed the building, which covers 250 square metres and is topped by a barrel vault up to ten metres high, with references to the sacristy of Toledo Cathedral, the sacristy of Granada Cathedral and the Sistine Chapel. On the ceiling of the main hall, painted in an intense blue, Sevillano developed an original scheme inspired by Renaissance painting; a smaller room evokes Milton’s “Paradise Lost” and a frieze runs through the rooms. The walls also display drawings by the artist.

The space opened to the public with the support of the Fundación Provincial de Cultura (Provincial Culture Foundation), which published an informative leaflet available at the tourist offices of Olvera and Torre Alháquime.
