About the museum
The Museo de Bellas Artes de Badajoz was created in 1919 on the initiative of the painter Adelardo Covarsí, its first director until 1951, under a decree of 1913 that ordered the creation of a provincial fine arts museum in the capitals that did not yet have one. The first three rooms opened to the public on 4 January 1920 in the Palacio Provincial, with 58 works.
The seat grew in phases: in 1979 a late 19th-century building on calle Meléndez Valdés was fitted out, and in 1998 another opened on calle Duque de San Germán. The most recent major extension, with two new buildings designed by the studio Hago (Antonio Álvarez-Cienfuegos and Emilio Delgado-Martos), was inaugurated on 30 March 2015 and was nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award for contemporary architecture.
The collection exceeds 2,000 pieces and focuses on Extremaduran art, with painting, sculpture, drawing and printmaking from the 16th century to today. Its holdings were declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico in 1962. The route begins with works from the 20th and 21st centuries and goes back in time to works from the 16th century.
