About the museum
The museum was founded by the Club Taurino Extremeño de Badajoz, the first bullfighting club in Extremadura, which was officially established on 20 December 1949. It is housed in the club’s premises, an old three-storey building in the historic centre of the city, and is considered the region’s first museum.
Its collection traces the bullfighting history of Badajoz and Extremadura through hundreds of posters dating from the late 17th century, photographs of bullfighters from every era, costumes, official and unpublished documents, and the heads of bulls famous for their bravery. One room is devoted to the Bienvenida dynasty, originally from the Extremaduran town of Bienvenida, and other holdings commemorate figures such as Reverte. The museum also has a projection room and a library.
It also functions as a centre for bullfighting documentation and research. Its activities include the Semana Taurina Pacense, with lectures and discussions, and the trophies that the club awards after the bullfights of the San Juan fair.
