About the museum

The Museo de Guadalajara opened in 1838 and, according to the museum itself, is Spain's oldest provincial museum. Since 1973 it has occupied the Palacio del Infantado, a late Gothic building erected around 1480 by Juan Guas and Egas Coeman for the second Duke of the Infantado.

The permanent display consists of two proposals. “Tránsitos” offers an anthropological journey through the cultures of the province, from the Palaeolithic to the 20th century, and brings together pieces of fine art, archaeology and ethnography. “El Palacio del Infantado. Los Mendoza y el poder en Castilla” interprets the building itself and its lineage in a room with 16th-century fresco paintings.

Among the spaces of the palace, the fresco rooms stand out, decorated between 1578 and 1580 by Rómulo Cincinato, together with the Patio de los Leones, the Upper Cloister and the Garden Gallery, built between 1497 and 1512. The museum also has two rooms for temporary exhibitions, an assembly hall and an audiovisual room where lectures, book presentations, concerts and plays are held.
