About the museum
The museum is housed in the former railway station of Villanueva de Córdoba, a building erected between 1906 and 1907 and opened on 3 July 1907. The line linked Peñarroya with Puertollano, carried minerals as well as passengers, and closed permanently on 1 August 1970. After decades out of use, the building now houses the museum's rooms.
The origins of the collections go back to the early 1970s, when a local school group, the Patrulla de Batidores No. 116 of the TVE programme “Misión Rescate” (Rescue Mission), located archaeological sites and gathered a collection. These finds were displayed for a time in the municipal library.
The exhibition space is a corridor surrounding a central cube with reconstructions of features of interest in the municipality, arranged chronologically. The collections span from the Lower Palaeolithic to the modern and contemporary periods, with sections on Prehistory, the Iberians, Rome, the Visigothic monarchy, Al-Andalus and the dolmen heritage of Los Pedroches. The burial goods of Minguillo IV, from the third millennium BC, are a highlight. The museum also has an audiovisual and activities room.
