About the museum
The Museo Antonio Rodríguez Luna occupies the former baroque hermitage of San Jacinto, also called the Virgen de la Misericordia, on the Plaza del Charco in Montoro. The building, dating from 1778, has a single nave and a gadrooned dome with polychrome stucco decoration, considered the best example of stucco baroque in the province of Córdoba. From 1720 the Cofradía del Santo Rosario de la Misericordia, whose purpose was to bury the poor, was based in the hermitage.
Antonio Rodríguez Luna was born in Montoro in 1910 and trained in Seville and Madrid. After the Civil War he passed through the camp at Argelès-sur-Mer and went into exile in Mexico, where he taught and trained many painters; there he also obtained a fellowship from the Guggenheim Foundation in New York. In 1981 he donated several works to Montoro town council so that they could be exhibited in the hermitage, and he died in his home town in 1985.
The single-artist museum is spread over three spaces with fifteen canvases painted between 1973 and 1980, the artist’s last period, dominated by abstraction, black and an unusual play of colour. The most prominent work is “Toro furioso”, which many scholars link to the pain of exile. After the painter’s death, sketches, his easel and other working tools were also donated.
