About the museum
The Museo del Aceite de Montoro occupies the Tercias Catedralicias, an 1784 building erected to store oil, wine and wheat from the payment of ecclesiastical tithes. Its neoclassical doorway bears the inscription linking it to the Chapter of the Cathedral of Córdoba, in whose name it was registered. The building has two floors divided into three naves, with ribbed vaults on the ground floor, and a small entrance courtyard.
After the disentailment (desamortización) it stopped serving its original function and over time was used as a prison in the post-war period, a stable, a farm-tool store and a carpentry workshop. In 1987 the Consejería de Cultura of the Junta de Andalucía declared it a building of social interest. In 2007 a thematic museum on olive oil was installed in it, which has been renovated since then, and the building is listed in the General Catalogue of Andalusian Historical Heritage.
The exhibition shows the importance of the olive grove in Montoro through panels on oil extraction from Roman times to the present day, farm tools, esparto objects, documents from oil factories, old photographs and a model of an olive mill with its rooms.
