About the museum

The Museo Arqueológico Municipal de Montoro opened on 28 February 1992 and is owned and run by the municipality. Its current home is the former hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Castillo or de la Mota, in the historic centre, where a castle once stood. The building, 327 m² arranged in three naves separated by columns of molinaza stone on bases of blue jasper, is dated to the 13th century, although it was altered until the 18th century. Its capitals are among the few Romanesque art elements preserved in Córdoba, and the church is thought to have made use of rooms from a mosque in the Muslim alcazaba.

The collection starts from a large display of minerals and fossils found in the municipality of Montoro, expanded with donations from all over Spain, and traces local history from the Palaeolithic. The 1980 excavations at Llanete de los Moros produced a notable group of Greek and Iberian pottery, important for the study of pre-Roman trade on the peninsula. From the Roman era, when Montoro was the city of Epora, a thoracata sculpture survives; there are few remains from the medieval period, among them the Ángel orante by Mateo Inurria.

One of the most outstanding pieces is the Estela del Guerrero, found in the countryside of the municipality, whose inscription shows signs compatible with the oldest known Iberian scripts. The museum also houses ethnological display cabinets with coins, banknotes and tools no longer in use.
