About the museum
The Museo de la Matanza is a municipally owned space created by Alcaracejos town council to show how pigs were traditionally slaughtered in the village and how their products were made. It is an ethnographic museum focused on pig rearing, slaughter and the use of the animal, and on the importance of this tradition to the subsistence economy of the Los Pedroches comarca.
The slaughter was a festive occasion that brought together parents, siblings, children, neighbours and friends, and served to stock the larder for the whole year. The museum displays the utensils that were used and explains them with information panels and projections. The founding collection consists of ethnological items from the municipality, donated by local residents.
The visit is guided and may include a tasting of pork-slaughter products. Booking in advance is required.
