About the museum

The Museo de Historia y Tradiciones de Colmenar y los Montes de Málaga, also known as the Museo Histórico Municipal, is owned by the town council and dates from 2007. It is housed in the former home of the Fundación Molina Padilla, an example of traditional Andalusian architecture whose cobbled entrance hall runs through both wings of the building to the patio.

The centre interprets the agrarian architecture of the Málaga sierra between the 16th and 19th centuries, especially the mountain wine presses (lagares de montaña), a type specific to these mountains and a model of rural habitat. This is a heritage that requires research, conservation and promotion.

The collection ranges from prehistoric stone axes to Roman and medieval ceramics, and includes objects relating to the history of viticulture as well as an ethnographic set of pack-saddle making (albardonería), linked to the old trade of muleteering (arriería), which was central to the village’s economy.
