About the museum
The Museo de la Miel de Málaga began as a project of the province's beekeepers, grouped in the Asociación Malagueña de Apicultores. Its aims were to give value to the quality honeys of the area, to explain the role of bees in the environment and to encourage generational renewal in the sector. Before it opened, the Casa Museo de la Miel project received the award for the best tourism project in Málaga in 2008.
The museum was opened on 20 December 2010 in a building made available by Colmenar town council, which had been the seat of the Hermandad de Labradores (farmers' brotherhood). It has received school visits since 2011 and now also functions as a tourist and educational resource, with guided visits, workshops and tastings.
The route explains honey production from antiquity to the present. There is a thematic beekeeping room with touch screens and panels; the Juan Manuel Sepúlveda room, with beehives and tools from the last fifty years; an area on the origins of beekeeping, with reproductions of rock art and Iberian beehives; a room that recreates the inside of the hive, with backlit giant honeycombs; and a workshop classroom. The collection includes beehives, smokers, extraction tools, containers and a beekeeping library, thanks to loans from associated beekeepers.
