About the museum
The museum of the Cavalry Academy dates back to 1899, when a first museum was created to gather and preserve documents, weapons and objects recalling the history of the Spanish cavalry. The present museum, owned by the Spanish Army, was organised from 1975 and is housed in the same military training centre, which is still active.
Its collections include paintings, portraits and miniatures, among them the Battle of Treviño by Víctor Morelli. There are weapons from the 16th century onwards, such as pieces from the Royal Guard, as well as edged weapons, pistols, revolvers and regulation cavalry sabres from the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection is completed by equestrian statues, standards, trophies, photographs, horseshoes, saddles, saddle cloths and a set of lead soldiers of cavalry and dragoon regiments.
Visits are always guided and by reservation, in a building that is still in use as a military academy. This makes it an unusual opportunity to see inside such an institution.
