About the museum
The name “Almoina” recalls a medieval charitable institution built after the conquest of the city by James I. When that building was demolished, layers of archaeological remains appeared underground, telling the story of Valencia from its foundation as Valentia in the 2nd century BC.
The archaeological centre, of about 2,500 m², lies behind the cathedral and the basilica of the Virgin. A route along walkways allows visitors to see the remains in situ, complemented by technological media that help to imagine what the buildings were like.
Among the most important remains are the sanctuary of Asclepius, the Roman curia and forum, the Visigothic baptistery and part of the Muslim alcázar. The itinerary is organised in five stages: the foundation of the city, the Roman Empire, the first Christian city, the Islamic period and the late medieval Almoina.
