About the museum
The Palau de Cervelló, on the Plaza de Tetuán opposite the Convento de Santo Domingo, belonged to the counts of Cervelló. After the demolition of the Palacio del Real in 1810 it became the official residence of the monarchs who visited Valencia. Ferdinand VII stayed there in 1814, when he signed the decree dissolving the Cortes and repealing the Constitution of 1812, and in 1840 Queen Maria Christina renounced the regency there.
Of the 18th-century building only the neoclassical façade survives, with two towers and two floors of balconies. In 1976 it was declared a Provincial Historic-Artistic Monument and became the property of the Ayuntamiento de Valencia, which restored it and opened it as a museum in 2003.
The visit includes two exhibitions on the ground floor: one on the palace as the seat of illustrious figures during the 19th century, and “El Tesoro de la Memoria”, with holdings from the Archivo Municipal. The Bourbon gallery on the noble floor, the frescoes of the south tower and the ballroom with paintings by R. Orozco and J. Benlliure can also be seen. The building also houses the Archivo Histórico Municipal and the Serrano Morales library.
