About the museum

The museum grew out of the collection that scholar Manuel González Martí and his wife, Amelia Cuñat Monleón, assembled over decades and donated to the State on 7 February 1947. In its early years it was based in the founder's house and, after the building was restored between 1950 and 1954, it was installed in the Palace of the Marqués de Dos Aguas, where it opened its doors.

The palace originated as a Gothic house of the Rabassa de Perellós family. Around 1740 it was remodelled in the Baroque style, with the monumental alabaster portal designed by Hipólito Rovira and carved by Ignacio Vergara. Between 1854 and 1867 the marquis Vicente Dasí Lluesma commissioned a far-reaching eclectic ornamental refurbishment, which created the decorated salons visitors see today. The building was declared a historic-artistic monument in 1941.

A new wing was built between 1969 and 1972, and between 1990 and 1998 the museum closed for a complete rehabilitation. Today it combines the setting of the 19th-century palace, with furniture, carriages and decorative objects, and a large collection of Spanish ceramics, with particular attention to the Valencian production of Paterna and Manises.
