About the museum
The Museo de la Arriería Maragata is a municipal museum that brings together objects, documents, old photographs, maps, drawings and engravings on the culture of the muleteers of the Leonese Maragatería. It opened in 2000, largely thanks to the drive of the researcher Concha Casado.
It was installed in the former schools of Santiago Millas, on calle Astorga, within a complex of traditional rural architecture in the Barrio de Arriba covering some 580 square metres. The house was originally the home of Julián Alonso Rodríguez, who donated it in 1915 as a school for boys and a residence for the schoolmistress. In 1926 further rooms were added to extend the school, with money from another local resident, Ventura Alonso, and in gratitude the municipality named the museum after him.
The building was adapted as a regional ethnographic museum, with the aim of researching, preserving and promoting the traditional culture of the district. Visitors learn about Maragato life, its customs, costumes and craftwork, and above all the muleteering activity. Santiago Millas is also listed as a historic-artistic ensemble of muleteers' architecture.
